CHW Hospitals of the Central Coast Award Grants


In keeping with the mission and values of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), a health care system dedicated to improving the quality of life for our communities served, the CHW Hospitals of the Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, French Hospital Medical Center and Marian Medical Center, have named 20 local nonprofit organizations as the recipients of the 2011 CHW Community Grants totaling more than $169,000.

CHW grant funding is used by local organizations to provide services to the underserved populations of the economically disadvantaged, women and children, mentally or physically disabled, etc. The intent of the annual community grant program is to help non-profit organizations with an interest in building healthier communities by improving local residents’ nutritional resources, physical activity and living conditions.

The grant awardees received their funding at breakfasts held in their honor. The recipients of the 2011 Catholic Healthcare West grants from CHW Hospitals of the Central Coast are:

Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (Grants totaling $27,000):

 


  • Alliance for Pharmaceutical Access. Inc (APA) received $2,000 to provide access to prescription medications through online patient assistance programs, to bridge the barriers (technology, language, literacy levels) experienced by the uninsured, under-insured, low and very-low income individuals to secure costly medications free of charge

  • Cal Poly's Stride received $2,000 to support agencies of the Central Coast in promoting a healthy weight throughout individuals’ life spans.

  • Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County received $3,000 to provide low-income seniors, ages 50 and older, with competent, convenient and free preventive and maintenance health screening, education and referrals regarding aging and chronic disease issues.

  • Community Health Centers of the Central Coast received $2,500 to provide low income, uninsured SLO County children with dental exams, treatment, fluoride varnishes/sealants and dental health education at the Give Kids A Smile Program held at the Nipomo Dental Clinic.

  • Food Bank Coalition received $5,000 to distribute food weekly to 600 households

  • Jack’s Helping Hand, Inc. received $2,000 to address the unmet medical needs of children with special needs under the age of 21 in San Luis Obispo County

  • South County Youth Coalition received $3,500 to provide scholarships to low income families for youth programs.

  • South County People’s Kitchen received $5,000 to provide nourishing meals and fellowship 365 days a year to any and all who are in need in our community

  • Transitions-Mental Health received $2,000 to help youth, adults and seniors with mental illness in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

French Hospital Medical Center (Grants totaling $45,000):

 


  • Alliance for Pharmaceutical Access. Inc (APA) received $15,000 to provide access to prescription medications through online patient assistance programs, to bridge the barriers (technology, language, literacy levels) experienced by the uninsured, under-insured, low and very-low income individuals to secure costly medications free of charge.

  • Cancer Well-Fit, Inc. received $14,300 to sustain and grow their exercise program to include training of instructors and purchasing exercise equipment.

  • Community Action Partnership of SLO County (CAPSLO) received $5,500 to cover marketing, outreach and education materials in English and Spanish, and labs and blood work for their Forty Wonderful Program which will increase low-income women’s awareness of the availability of the services.

  • Friends of Prado Day Center received $4,000 to provide motel vouchers for homeless clients who are medically fragile and require uninterrupted bed rest for seven days or less to recover from a diagnosed medical condition or a contagious illness.

  • SLO YMCA received $2,200 to provide support for their Jump Rope Program and their after school programs, which emphasize good nutrition and physical activity as a lifestyle to prevent and reduce childhood obesity.

  • Transitional Food and Shelter, Inc. received $4,000 to provide temporary shelter for homeless medically fragile patients in this San Luis Obispo County 24 hours a day.

Marian Medical Center (Grants totaling $97,182):

 


  • Alliance for Pharmaceutical Access, Inc. (APA) received $15,000 to provide access to prescription medications through online patient assistance programs, to bridge the barriers (technology, language, literacy levels) experienced by the uninsured, under-insured, low and very-low income individuals to secure costly medications free of charge.

  • Food Bank of Santa Barbara County received $10,000 to provide nourishment to those in need by acquiring and distributing safe, nutritious food via local agencies and to provide education to solve hunger and nutritional problems in Santa Barbara County.

  • Good Samaritan Shelter received $22,182 to provide emergency, transitional, and affordable housing with supportive services to the homeless and those in recovery throughout the Central Coast.

  • People for Leisure and Youth, Inc. received $15,000 to enhance, maintain, and promote the recreation, leisure, and parks services offered by the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department.

  • Santa Maria Valley FISH Meals on Wheels received $10,000 to provide medical diet meals to the needy, elderly, low income and limited income people in the Santa Maria Valley.

  • Santa Maria Valley YMCA received $15,000 to provide health education programs on physical education and nutrition to obese children and their families.

  • SMOOTH, Inc. received $10,000 for the Senior Dial-A-Ride service for homebound seniors.
