Thomson Reuters examines the performance of nearly 1000 hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and angioplasties.

HealthGrades grades the performance of every hospital in the United States for 28 different procedures and treatments, from hip replacement to heart bypass surgery. The study looks at trends in mortality and complication rates. “The fact is, patients are twice more likely to die at low-rated hospitals than at highly rated hospitals for the same diagnoses and procedures,” said Rick May, MD, an author of the HealthGrades study. “With Washington focused on rewarding high-quality hospitals and empowering patients to make more informed healthcare choices, this information comes at a turning point in the healthcare debate.”

NRC surveys 250,000 consumers regarding their hospital of preference for overall quality and image. FHMC is the only hospital in San Luis Obispo County to have received this award.

CHART rates more than 220 hospitals for heart attack, heart failure, heart bypass surgery, pneumonia, and maternity, which are the five most common reasons for being admitted to a hospital. Hospitals are rated on quality and timeliness of care for several conditions, as well as patient experience with overall medical, surgical and maternity care, and adherence to recommended patient safety practices. The report ranks FHMC above the state average for nearly all clinical measures including heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia care. The results, which can be found at calhospitalcompare.org allows consumers to compare hospital data against the state averages and against other hospitals.
