New Bone Densitometer
Patients, physicians and support staff at French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) are now utilizing a new technologically advanced bone densitometer thanks to a generous donation from the FHMC Foundation.
A bone densitometer detects changes in bone density, which can lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the disease that causes bones to become more fragile and likely to break. Years ago, it was detected only after a bone broke. Today, a bone density test, also called densitometry, can determine if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of osteoporosis before a persons' bones break.
The new machine replaces an older model and provides faster readings, clearer results and requires less wait time for patients. Radiologist Kenneth Serra, MD says, "Osteoporosis affects millions of women, especially post menopausal women. If diagnosed early through the use of this bone densitometer, steps can be taken through medication to tremendously slow the rate of osteoporosis and strengthen bones." Osteoporosis is most common in women, who begin to lose bone mass after the age of thirty. A person's race also makes a difference. Caucasian and those of Southeast Asian descent are at a greater risk. The best way to avoid the onset of osteoporosis is to receive an osteoporosis assessment earlier, rather than later.
